I landed myselt a 24" Grizzly drum sander at the incredible price of FREE!!! I really can't believe my good fortune! All I have to do is help a co-worker move his unisaw, jointer, and drill press to his new house and I can have the sander. I was hoping to just get to borrow it here and there, but when I was told I could have it, I was floored! He said it'll need the motor put back in (he took it out to see if he could move it easier, guess not), the conveyor belt squels he said, and I will probably need to adjust it. Hey no problem, I can tinker with this thing all day for that price. It couldn't come at a better time too. I started working on #'s 3 and 4 a few months ago but I stopped when it came to bringing my backs and sides to thickness. I re-sawed them myself and they are rather, uh, erratic. Handplaning was tearing out my figure no matter how sharp my planes. So I gave up for the last month or two. I was getting pretty frustrated and was thinking about paying someone to sand them or something, and then this came along. Wow, still can't believe it. And maybe I shouldn't until its sitting in my garage. I guess now I have to wire 220 to the garage, or get a big extension cord. And I guess a dust collector is in order now... Hmm. Oh well, totally worth it I think! I'm just really, really excited! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

You know, I guess I do have a question: How many guys do you think it'll take to lift this thing up 6-12" to get it into a trailer? Three, four? Same with the unisaw. Don't know how much those weight, but I think the sander is about 500#. |

Outstanding!! If you can't get any help getting it into the truck perhaps you can break it down a little. |

Sounds great buddy. I wish I had friends like you. I moved my unisaw into my basement by myself (I am not a strong guy at all) by breaking it down to the bare parts. Take off everything you can, the table, wings whatever you can. I even took off my fence and such. Good luck on the move (your luck seems to be very good). Keep on keepin on, Homeboy |
Sounds great, but of course now you have to order a 3 hp Dust Gorilla from Oneida to ensure improved dust collection. With the bucks you 'saved' on the sander, it should not be a problem clearing it with the SWMBO. But seriously - plan on either a minimum 2 hp cyclone or 1-1/2 hp DC with a cartridge or other sub-5 micron capability, as most of what drum and wide belts produce is in the size range that is most dangerous. If you can smell what you are sanding, you need better collection.
I was thinking about getting a Harbor Freight/Central Machinery dust collector and just pipe it outside so I don't have to worry about getting fine micron bags. Heck, they say they pull like 1800 CFM or something. |
